080102 Freda Farnworth soprano & Edward Rigg piano
Rochdale’s own leading soprano Freda Farnworth brought in the New Year at Toad Lane Performing Arts Centre in style, with the traditional flavour of Vienna. Gershwin’s ‘By Strauss’ set the tone and the theme. Her recital went on to include delightful songs by Stolz, Lehar and the Strauss family themselves. Interspersed between these we had arias and songs from those slightly more serious but melodious Austrians, Mozart and Brahms. Freda trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and has become well-known and loved in the area as a singer, producer, conductor and teacher.
She was expertly accompanied by Edward Rigg at the piano who also contributed his own Viennese confection with the solo ‘Excerpt from Roses of the South’ by Strauss.
